Hi, I'm new at using Salamander, I've been tinkering around with the options it has to offer but I haven't been able to find a definitive way to enable documents (i.e., PDFs) to have an image preview on the thumbnail. I see that it is generally mentioned as being a capability of the software, but I can't find out how to actually do that.

I'm using Windows 10 in case thats needed.

You can't currently do that, only if you write a plugin.

There was a plugin called Explorer Thumbnails Plugin. There is no source code available and the plugin developer zarevak did not continue the development.
