Compare directory ignoring file extension

Post by vit »

Hi,

I am looking for the following feature that would extend compare directories function. If I uncheck all options in the compare directories check box, files missing in the second directory are marked. Would it be possible to make an option to ignore file extension in the comparison? Just compare base file names.

There is my motivation: I store my photos in several formats (raw, png, jpg lab, jpg web, raw params, ...). Each format in separate directory. Sometimes I make a decision to delete some photos. I do it in a single directory (typically web jpg - it optimizes the speed of previewing). Then I would like to delete the same files in the rest counterpart directories.

Thanks

Interesting idea, reminds me of a recent suggestion to completely ignore filenames. Anyway, there's a way around that. Either you temporarily rename the files in one directory to have the same extension and then compare as usual, or you can make a list of them (Ctrl+M), use format $(FileNamePart).yourext$(CRLF), so yourext matches the extension found in the other panel and then Edit > Advanced > Load Selection... and Edit > Invert Selection to select the files that aren't present in the other panel.

Thanks for our suggestion. I'll look at making the selection list but it seems, it it a bit time consuming operation.

Another idea of directory comparison: now only bigger-size files are selected (if this is checked). But (at least) for me I much more need the different-size file to be selected. Files update might sometimes leads to smaller volume. I liked the compare directory function very much before, but since bigger file size has been introduced, it has started to be useless for me.

Best wishes

You can work around that by adding the selection from one panel to the other.
