Vista support

Post by mcleaver »

Happy to have a verison of Salamabder that won't stop working in a few months!
I do however note it is less that ideal in Vista.

When copying to sensitive locations (e.g. c:\Program Files), Vista asks for confirmation. But Salamander just refuses to copy. Can it be updated to include support for vista's security chield?

We will support Vista UAC in Salamander 2.53.

Edit: changed version numbers: 2.6 to 2.51, 2.7 to 2.52, and 2.8 to 2.53

Not in 2.51 or 2.52? :)

Martin, the UAC support means a FUNDAMENTAL change in Salamander core. We must divide Salamander into two executables. A lot of work, beta testing stage will be essential.

a workaround for this is to set salamander to run as administrator... right click on the shortcut, properties, compatibility and there tick the box "run this program as administrator" or something similar (sorry, don't have english version of vista)

Yes, this indeed helps. The only annoying thing is that every time I start Salamander with this option it is asking me whether I really want to allow it. Any clue how to make some program "safe" for admin mode = without asking?

This is for security. Imagine, that you install some SW and it creates shortcut with this option enabled and you're logged with admin rights. Then without asking, you'll never know, that program has full permissions.

BTW I'm running AS without full permissions and without problems. If I need to do something in system etc. dirs, I'll start it as admin or I'll use command line, 'cause this isn't often.

Please notice that all applications started from such Salamander are running also "as administrator" (this is probably unwanted). Better is to start Salamander "as administrator" only if you really need it and when you finish "administrator work", exit Salamander.

well, I guess turning off UAC... but I wouldn't recommend it

Most of the necessary Shell Extensions do NOT show in the right-click menu. For example, the external 7-zip shell extension items (Add to archive, Extract, etc.) are not shown, but in Windows Explorer they are! :? The same for Tag&Rename, etc.

It would be a very good idea for Salamander to load Unknown File type icon from a shell dynamic link library and not use its own (just try it on Vista  ).

I can imagine how far we are from the next version release, as there MUST be the x64 version of the program included as well as Vista-tuned 32-bit executable. :!:

(I use Vista Ultimate x64, 7-zip 4.52 x64, Tag&Rename x86, Altap Salamander [use it less often than I used to because its functionality is very limited under Vista.)

All you need to do is to take ownership of the program's executable and give yourself Full Access to the .exe file. No need to run it as administrator.

It's because these are 64-bit apps. and if they're extending context menu, it's "in 64-bit way", so AS isn't able to load these (AS don't see it).

64bit applications need 64bit Shell Extensions and 32bit applications need 32bit Shell Extensions. AFAIK it is possible to install both (32 and 64bit) versions of some shell extensions at the same time to solve these problems. Windows Vista 64bit also includes 32bit Windows Explorer for compatibility with older (32bit) Shell Extensions.

BTW: 64bit version of Altap Salamander 2.53 should be avaiable in Winter 2007

I have Tag&Rename, which is 32-bit, and, by the idea, there should be its extension in AS, which is also 32-bit. But it is not extended, I don't know why. :?

Jayrome and Guest, please look at Forum Rules
