Store names?

I read about this key shortcut in the help:
Alt+Shift+Num + Store names of selected files and directories

Can anyone explain to me what it does? If I press Alt+Shift+Num +, and (later) Alt+Num + (Select stored names) or Alt+Num - (Unselect stored names), nothing happens...

I do not think I need it, as there are so many other ways to to this, but I just wondered what the key should do.

The 2.52 and 2.53 PB38 help still mention:
Alt+Shift+Num + Store names of selected files and directories
Alt+Num + Select stored names
Alt+Num - Unselect stored names
