Create New Folder Like Windows Explorer

Post by deviationer »

Please give us the option to have SS behave like windows explorer when creating new folders.

Create New Folder --> Auto-Select and Rename

Or be able to re-bind the F7 function to a different key

Since I cannot find an command named Create New Folder, I do not really understand, which function you refere to.

There are two basic ways to create a new folder. One is Create Directory..., which does not create the directory until you entered the name and confirme it by pressing enter or clicking OK. So there is no reason to rename it right again. The new folder does become the current item. It must not be selected automatically (note: you select items by CRT-clicking them, with the INS key or with space. In standard colours, a selected item turns red).

The second way is by using the pannel background's context menu and choos Folder from the New-submenu. In this case, I agree, that it probably was a good idea to approximate explorer's behaviour more closely by entering quick rename mode automatically. However, I considered it an even better idea to redirect the New Folder function to Create Directory..., since I consider it ill behaviour to create a folder with a standard name and ask the user to rename it instead of asking the user to provide the necessary information to create the folder as it should be from the beginning.

I don't understand what your requested change has to do with your request for "Or be able to re-bind the F7 function to a different key". The introductory Or suggests, that there is a connection. Could you please explain. Otherwise, it is just a request for configurable keyboard mappings. Why limit it to one particular key?
