Cannot get DVD contents to refresh

Post by UnhappyBunny »

I am unable to get the contents of a DVD disk to refresh. The contents of the last DVD that was successfully accessed is always displayed even when the DVD is changed. I have tried everything I can to resolve. Is there a way that SS can directly access the DVD to refresh the contents instead of relying on the register in XP?
This is a big prioblem for me as I use DVDs to archive my files and I am spending half my life trying to access the DVD to test whether the backup was completely successful.
I know it's not not a bug in SS but good ol' Micros**t.

Hello, try to update your drivers or use another DVD drive.

Salamander uses standard way (Windows API) to access logical drives.

I didn't think it was Salamander's problem, except to the extent that it relies on Micros**t to provide the data. That the problem persists over Windows Explorer and Salamander points to that common denominator. I look forward to the day that company goes the way of Digital Research (anyone remember CP/M? - We will be saking 'Anyone remember Micros**t?' in twenty years, hopefully)

What exactly do you mean when you say this? Does it not happen automatically or does it not even update if you press CTRL-F9 when the pannel displaying that drive is active?

I don't think Micros**t is to be blamed for this. Rather it's the dives manufacturer or you yourself if the problem is due to some outdated driver or misconfiguration of the OS. I admit, though, that configuring media change notification is fairly complex, and, as I am not into it, I can't offer any help really. but maybe this article can give you a start with one pointer and many terms for further investigation (google is your friend).
Anyway: don't wast you life! Rather by a new drive or pay an expert to resolve the problem.

Thanks for advice

Thanks SvA for the info.

I tried to go to the article but I got a 'cannot find' message. I'll try another day.

I tend not to use Windows Explorer now since, when it crashes, I get a completely blue screen - no icons or anything, and I have to physically power down and start again. Because all components of Widows are connected, if one crashes then it brings down the whole house of cards. I use Servant Salamander now. The free version doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Explorer but it doesn't crash my system - a fair trade in my view.
I just do the regular MS updates and have relied on the software for the DVD drive that came with the machine. I have put a query into Pioneer. There is an upgrade to the firmware but I am nervous of losing a working DVD drive if I install it. I will ponder that choice.

Another gripe on MS products. Media Player seems to stay in memory after I close it down, preventing me doing anything with the file that it was accessing. I have to go into task manager to close it down. I use VLC player now. Much better.

As long as there are free alternatives to MS products there isn't a great problem.

Sorry to revive such an old thread, but I experienced similar problems when Nero DriveSpeed was running. For instance if I started it before putting a disc into the drive, the disc wouldn't be recognized at all.
