the issue does not happen with normal (lowercase) .jpg images, only with uppercase JPG, and I cannot seem to find a way to reload thumbnails after switching the extensions to lowercase (eventually just resorted to removing and putting them back)

I'm thinking it's going to be the particular files themselves, rather then the case of the extension.

Can you post a link to a few of the particular files.

Also, take some "lower case" .jpg & (copy) & rename to .JPG & confirm that those ("upper case") do still show the expected thumbnails.
