Without PictView installed there are no thumbnails of images available. The manual misses the info about the necessity of PictView (or other appropriate plug-in) to see thumbnails of images. Have you set the prefered language in the settings?

I've made a shortcut in start menu and set the keyboard shortcut properties to CTRL+ALT+S and allowed only one instance of salamander.
This way it opens every time I push it. Even Not yet started or minimized.
