I would like to see virtual folders.
Apparently there are two definitions of virtual folders. I am not talking about saving a search result as a folder.
The kind of virtual folder I would like to see is a folder which holds what appears to be a duplicates of other files (or folders). However they are not duplicates of the files, because they are only stored once on the hard drive. And they are not shortcuts because if you copy a shortcut, the shortcut is moved. If you delete a shortcut, the shortcut is deleted.
The virtual folders I am talking about are "fake" folders which give you a view of any files or folders that you choose to add to it. So although you can see a file in the virtual folder, and you can interact with it in the same as if you were viewing the folder where it actually sits, you are not looking at that folder. You are looking at it through another "window".
Not sure if that makes sense, so to illustrate here is an example. Say I have some files on my hard drive which I wish to copy to a removable drive on a regular basis. I don't want to put them in the same folder, and I don't want to use anything else other than Servant Salamander to copy them.
If I could use virtual folders, I could add these files which are sitting at different locations on my hard drive to the virtual folder. Then each time I want to backup up, I just copy the virtual folder (or its contents) to the USB drive.
This concept is similar to the search window in Windows, where it shows a bunch of different files, all in the same location, even though they are not all sitting in the one location. But unlike the search facility, I want to be able to add or remove items by hand, and I want the items to still be there the next time I look (compared to Windows having to look for them).
I think Magellan Explorer has something like this, but I much prefer to use Servant Salamander.
Thanks
Virtual Folders
Hi,
similar topic was already discussed in Czech: Kategorie pro adresare
- initial suggestion was about having categories for folders
- mention about MacOSX's color labels (Info:http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macos ... der-labels)
- suggestion about reading Category information from ADS DocumentSummaryInformation and showing it in Custom Column
- there was suggestion about support for Windows Vista Virtual Folders
- I suggested using Junction Points; SvA already filled Feature request about Hardlinks and Junction points in English
For Juncion Point support, there is already:
- already mentioned SvA's topic about Junction Points and Hardlinks
- plan to change Delete command to Unlink for Junction Points
