I have two panels going a left and a right.
When I select a file from the left to copy to the right
panel it's moving the file from the left over to
the right instead of coping it.
How do I fix this?

Somehow the problem is now corrected

Because you hit the F6 key instead of F5.

I don't use the F keys for what I do.
I just drag the file from left to right and it copies it without losing the file on the left side

Well, believe me that if you start to use all the F keys and their combinations with CTRL & ALT, you will be much more productive then using a mouse.
Just hit F1 and when the help opens, go Shortcuts > Keyboard shortcuts. It requires a bit to get used to it, but when you do, it WILL speed up your workflow a lot.

Hey hi, please adjust your file manager setting to change the default behavior to copy instead of move when dragging files between panel.

Please learn to use the F5 copy F6 keys to move.
That is much faster then using a mouse.

Yes you are right. As mentioned earlier, the F5 key is typically used to refresh or reload a web page or to start a slideshow in PowerPoint. The F6 key is usually used to move the cursor or insertion point in a document or text field, or to switch between tabs in some web browsers.

Technically, the old DOS file managers used this combination to copy or move files. F5 for refresh came much much later.
It is always much faster to use keyboard shortcuts then to use the mouse.

By the way: Salamander uses the same unpredictable logic on drag and drop for files, as Windows Explorer does. You get copy or move depending on whether the destination is on the same volume as the source (or some condition similar to this).

That is one of the reasons I hardly ever use drag and drop for files in Windows Explorer. I expect all of my actions to be easily and intuitively predictable. For the same reason I hardly ever use delete to the waste bin. If I started doing this, I would start to expect that I can restore the file. However, If the file happened to be on a network location I would be screwed. Like this I have to stop and think, before I press Shift + Delete.
