Hi,
I just started using Growl for Windows to manage alerts and notificiations - instead of having each application displaying all kinds of different toasts/alerts/notifications using their own different concepts.
Now - my idea is to use notifications this way too, primarily for operations that take a while. My suggestion is to add support (optionally) display a GfW alert for operations that take longer than x seconds (and when the application is not in focus?). This would be for instance copy operations, but maybe also for alerts when a device is closed and no longer accessible.
To read more about Growl and the GNTP protocol, see here:
Another similar alternative messaging queue displayer/handler is Snarl.
