Hello everyone ,

I read in a post that using ressource hacker i can modify and submit another language "SLG" translation for salamander.
ok, but are there any recommandations that i should know before translating ?

I'm motivated to do the french translation since all my co-workers are asking me when the french language will be ready, but in french the words are very often longer than in english so the pop up windows or the menus, the configuration panels, and so on are to small or the the words are not readable.
Are those kind of case taken into account ? or do i have to be the shortest (even if the meaning is a little spoiled) ?

There is not support for longer strings. We are not sure how German translators were able to fit in "English" sized fields. Maybe Thomas could let us know?

We plan to prepare some sort of layouting support so it would be possible to take your translation (done for example in Resource Hacker) and update (automatically) layout of all dialogs.
It's our highest priority right now...

It is certainly good to try to not extend strings too much.

I tried and i can expand certain text controls... I'll try to be the shortest but for instance : "select" is "sélecionner" in french...
First question :
Is there a rule for the "&" I mean if the character is already used
- do Ihave to absolutely find a word that allow to use the same character than in english
- or can i use twice the same character
- or can i use another character
- or anything ?

Feel free to use your own hot keys for menu and dialogs.

It is better to avoid conflicts and choose unique letter for each item from the group (menu, dialog, etc)

Note regarding used terms: If you are not sure, please look at Windows 7 localization as source of "correct" terms.
We will definitely do it with English -> Czech translation.

I would recommend using "standard" hotkeys used by common programs such as Word, Acrobat or Photoshop: i.e. Fichier/Ouvrir probably uses 'O' in these programs, therefore assigning e.g. 'u' as the hotkey (when 'O' could seem to be more appropriate for another item in the group) would not be a good practise.
