I decided to buy Salamander while I really find it fabulous. I'm a software developer and I use the software in my everyday's work. I wish there was a plugin allowing to browse and edit Visual Source Safe files! Editing file would imply a new version check in. The plugin as a bit difficult and really developer use only would be an extra paid one.

You can use free tool called Effective SourceSafe

But I think VSS is quite obsolete, try to use SVN or TFS instead of it. Both of them can be integrated into shell, using TortoiseSVN and Visual Studio Team System 2008 Team Foundation Server Power Tools respectively.
