I wanted to find files in subdirectories only, excluding files in the current dir.

So I did a search with Search subdirectories ticked. Then I did a Refine - Subtract from Found Items with the same search conditions but Search subdirectories unticked.
All found files and folders were removed. Why?

How can I accomplish what I intended to do?

The Look in field (including Search subdirectories option) is ignored during Refine * Found Items commands. So in your case all items found in the first stage are "subtracted" during the second stage.

I don't think it is possible to do with Salamander, I'm sorry.

You can simply bypass this problem: in Find window in Found Items listview: select items from the first to the last on current path (watch Path column) and use Files/Hide command (Ctrl+H). Or you can sort items by Path (click on column header) and select & hide files from any other directory.
