I want to select multiple files for some operation, such as deleting, copying, etc. If I select the first one with just a normal left-click and attempt to select the others with a CTRL-left-click, the first file becomes de-selected. But, if I use CTRL-left-click for all files selected, including the first, then the selection works fine.

I believe that it should be immaterial how the first file is selected in order to give upward compatibility with Windows explorer. Another reason is that there should be no exceptions to any rules.

Selecting of names in Salamander works another way. When you click the file (no Shift or Ctrl modifier), the file is FOCUSED but not SELECTED. Selected files are displayed in the red color.

I believe we cannot change focused&unselected item to selected when you Ctrl+left-click another item. Imagine situation when you just Ctrl+left-clicked some item to deselect it, so it is focused&unselected. Then you want to select another item using Ctrl+left-click and your (just) unselected item becomes unintentionally selected...

Try to Ctrl+left-click some selected item in Windows Explorer. It will become focused&unselected. Then you are exactly in the "Salamander" state. You can Shift+left-click (or Ctrl+left-click) another item and selection will work exactly like in Salamander.

We should probably introduce (optionally) a new "Windows Explorer" selection behavior. In this mode selection will work exactly like in Windows Explorer, with all drawbacks (selection is lost when you left-click some file) and benefits (easy to use for users coming from the Windows Explorer world). The item would become focused&selected on left-click in such mode, so the problem will be solved.

We also believe that existing selection behavior is superior to Windows Explorer. Selection is persistent, you can navigate freely between your files (left+click, arrow keys, quick search), use F3 (View command), F4 (Edit command), or F2 (Quick rename) and refine your selection.
