Salandual - rethink of Salamander

Post by Evin »

Hello all!

Since Altap Salamander development slowed down, I wanted to replace it, but I did not find anything as good as Salamander. So I planned multiple times to develop my own version based on Salamander, but the research was very slow, so all of my attempt failed eventually.
Since AI is became a thing, and able to do great things with the proper guidance, and OpenSalamander published, I started a new project.
It looks like this is finally going somewhere.

Please note, I am not using code from OpenSalamander or any fork of it, but reuse their idea, the available features.
This is my personal project; learning AI-driven coding and at the same time recreate for myself all the Salamander feature with modern GUI and modern format supports.

If you want to check it, could help me to find issues, you can find it here, but do not propose features until v1.0 is not released, because there are a tons of idea and features still pending in my development plan:

Very short of feature of the first release:
  • Salamander's keys, with a Total Commander key map to choose in the first-start wizard or Options.
  • Fast panels: a custom-drawn list that stays smooth in a folder of 100,000 entries, drive strip, 30 hot paths, Change directory with completion, back and forward, folders restored at the next start.
  • File operations that ask first: checks before a copy starts, a conflict dialog, a per-disk queue with a speed graph, pause and speed limit, the Recycle Bin by default, long paths, Explorer-compatible clipboard and drag and drop.
  • Viewers (F3): text and hex for files of any size, a Tree view for JSON, YAML and XML, rendered Markdown, Jupyter notebooks and HTML pages, pictures including AVIF, WebP, HEIC, JPEG XL and camera RAW with photo information, and media information for video and audio.
  • Editor (F4): JSON, YAML and XML checked while you type, format, folds, find and replace, a live preview, safe saving.
  • Search and compare: Search with several texts, regular expressions and hex, Find duplicates, Compare directories, a file comparator that copies changes across, Make file list, Occupied space.
  • Themes: light and dark, Salamander Classic, high contrast, popular palettes and VS Code's own themes; make your own; follow Windows' light and dark mode.
  • Your settings stay yours: export, import and reset with Undo; a settings file that can't be read is never overwritten; portable mode with a portable.flag file. No telemetry, no update check.
