Custom panels columns

In the list of upcoming features we can read:
"Custom panel columns (parsers for EXIF, MP3 bitrate, Access Time, etc.) "

Will it be possible then to let a plugin take over a complete panel area?

For example, select a filename of a picture file in one panel and Pictview displays the picture in the other panel (as big as the panel area is).

It has nothing to do with custom columns. You are talking about another planned feature from ALTAP Roadmap - Quick View.
