IE Viewer hangs

Post by mdruiter »

To view xml files, I normally use the Internet Explorer Viewer plugin, which validates and indents the xml. Today I had such a file, but viewing it as usual caused the plugin to hang. The only way to close it was by forcibly unloading the plugin.
I narrowed the problem down to a very simple file. I tried to attach it, but that did not work out. All it contains is the following two lines:

Code: Select all

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html/>
Save this to a file, rename it to ieview.xml, and view it using the Internet Explorer viewer.

I haven't tried the beta 2 yet.

Hope this helps.

My IE8 successfully hangs (only the rendering/layout engine) on this file, so this report should probably be directed more towards Microsoft. Anyway, you've got my +1 - the user should be able to close the viewer window.

I searched for some time for a place to let Microsoft know. Finally it became: https://connect.microsoft.com/IE/feedba ... simple-xml (needs Live id :-( ).

(You've got to be crapin me. Not only do you need a live.com login, you further need a "Connect" registration :( .)

You actually got a hang in IE8, i.e., IE8 became non-responsive?
For me I didn't loose any functionality, though the .xml never "finished" loading.

(Internet Explorer Viewer did hang in Salamander.)

Yes therube, you are right, only the 'tab' content hangs.
Whereas in Salamander, the complete plugin hangs (on-topic again! :-))

Update: Microsoft (The IE Team) responded on 2-6-2010 19:51:
Thank you for your feedback. We were able to reproduce the issue and are investigating this.

Is the IE Viewer developer listening? Please prevent the plugin hang.

Update: according to Microsoft "this issue was resolved in the IE 9 Platform Preview Build released on 6/23/2010".
I'm afraid this won't help the IE Viewer, as it uses the IE 6 component IIRC.

That'd be another reason to update the plugin to use latest version of IE available, as mentioned in this Czech thread where IEViewer has CSS problems because the engine automagically uses IE6/7's old layouting.
