Is Salamander dead?

Hi guys

There is so little news lately that it looks to me like Salamander is dead, not developed anymore.
I know money is always the issue and from my side I have no issue paying for an updated license... i.e. if you (finally) update AS to Unicode support and said that it's a version 4.0. Most of the tools I use 'Royal TS', 'The Bat', 'Sandboxie', 'Bitdefender', 'Actual Multi Monitor',.... need a license update every year or two, so I have no issue paying for updated license and I'm sure most of other wouldn't either, just that the AS would continue with its awesomeness.

So is AS dead?

Still alive... good to know.

I understand how development goes (been programmer for 30+ years) and I completely understand that converting Local to Unicode is a !#!@#@!#.

Keep up the good project.

Glad to see the project is still alive and kicking. I hope you guys will maintain support for a long time as well.

Even after many years of using Altap Salamander on a daily basis, I still find new features in the core, and that is awesome. Loosing this project would be a severe loss. I don't know whether you've been considering of requiring purchase of a new license for the upcoming new major version, but I'd do that without any hesitation.

I'm concerned about this topic too. No updates since when? 2016?

I found Salamander after Commander was abandoned.

Most of us are still believe in you, please give us some feedback!

AS is dead. That's it.
Devs doesn't even care to respond, nobody cares about critical bugs, nobody responds even on email.
Dead project.

Guys, patience is a virtue. Quality developement in WIN32 simply takes time. The developers said on multiple occasions they are working on it, but it takes more time then they have expected (they even admitted that time approximations is not their strong side). They want to release a EAP when there is something to test.

There is a simple update on the roadmap page (https://www.altap.cz/salamander/roadmap/):
Updated on 02/28/2019
Most wanted features for next Altap Salamander versions

Support for Unicode
Support for High-DPI displays
Support for UAC
Tabs in panels
My guess is that the develpers are working hard on these features (for 4.0 version, paid upgrade) and do not want to be disturbed and that is understandable. I have it the same way.

That being said, I have to agree that the developers should have some kind of automated way where you could see the progress. Like a build platform, where you could have a night builds.

In my eyes there is no perfect alternative. You can check my post (in Czech) at: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5194&start=30#p67325

I don't even know what all those features that you mentioned are. I just like the program itself, but it apparently isn't recognizing my Esata BlacX cloning drive dock anymore, and I don't know why.

As for you Esata BlacX - the question is how the drive connects. If it is only MTP device like a mobile phone, then it is not yet supported. If it gets its own drive letter (e.g. E:) then it should be visible.

The features are the following:
Unicode support - support for non-english characters like řščš or ルすし in a same transparent way. There were mutliple character sets like cp850, win1250, but those were pain to deal with. The unicode unifies nearly all characters.

HIgh-DPI - if your display has high resolution like 2560x1600 on 13" display you need to have a way to make the smaller parts scalable or they will be unreadable.

UAC - user account control - enables you in windows to switch user context. Meaning if you star application as one user and you want to execute command as other you need to have this support.

Tabs in panels - tabs same as in your browser, you don't probably use only a single window, but you have a single window with multiple tabs opened.

I found out why. I had put the new drive on the dock, and hadn't initialized and formatted it. It sees it now, but only after I reboot with it running. I thought before that all I had to do was turn the dock on, but could be wrong. It was over a year ago when I used it last.

Thanks, people.

I was rude in the past when I was commenting the development status when my patience to wait for any update just come overloaded and it was not easy for me to calm down. I excuse for any inconvenience I caused to any members who started to ground me. But two years ago I had the feeling that development is not going as it should.
I already moved to different file manager and I am happy. But, and I dont know why, I am sometimes visiting the salamder web page to find out if I did mistake or I did the best choice in my life... still I think when I bought another file manager I did the best...

Speciall question to "tukanos", because members as you are making developers feeling they still have good believers to not communicate with the others. Please dont take me rude or anyting, but you are the element slowing down the push from others.....

You are absolutely right that developers are busy with the program changes, but do you thing that one sentence to the forum.. just to say.. guys we are working on it as we can and we are trying to bring something nice to you ... is so hard to write to the forum? It is just 5 seconds and everybody will be happy. But there is not answer to any question to anybody.. just confrontation from users like you who are attacking users like me who ask for update from developers. It is very simple to say to the community that something is happening, but it did not come for almost 5 months. That is sad.

I am with all of you to have this project alive, but I really needed to move forward and use another solution because UNICODE, UAC, TABS.. that is something I can not live without that anymore. And believe me.. since I am from the same country as developers, it is really sad to me. Also reason why I still return to see what is going on with the salamender.
