What next? Vote please: x64 version or UAC support

When Altap Salamander 2.53 with language support will be released, we will need to decide what to do next.

What is most important feature for you?

1. x64 version so you can display x64 shell extension in context menu or browse through the real C:\Windows\System32 directory on your Windows 7 x64.
2. UAC support so you need not to turn off UAC in Windows or escalate Altap Salamander for certain tasks (writing to C:\Program Files directory for example).

Please, help us make this decision and vote for your favorite feature. Thank you.

Not really understanding them implications, my impression is that ...

1) is an actual limitation, i.e. something that you can not do, not allowed to do

2) is simply an annoyance

Given that, then x64 would be more important.

---

I've got W7 x86 installed on a mule. I'll install AS & see what gives.

---

Perhaps explain a bit more the implications of each option.
(I suppose there are links here explaining?)

One, 64 bit version?.

I know Vista/W7 have those "pseudo" directories. Not having used x64, what is not available, that is, when running 32-bit OS?

Are Pictview & WinSCP still off the table for an x64 version?

There are several limitation for 32-bit applications running on 64-bit Windows.
With 32-bit AS we have two fundamental problems there:
1. We cannot access all directories due to File System Redirector.
2. When you open the context menu (right-click on file or directory), only 32-bit shell extensions will be displayed.
We need 64-bit version of AS to bypass these problems.

We are not sure about PictView and WinSCP plugins. There is option to run such plugins in 32-bit wrapper, but it looks really complicated.

The UAC is described in the mentioned Wikipedia article. One example: now it is not possible to create directory in "C:\Program Files" when Salamander is running on normal integrity level and UAC is turned ON on Windows Vista/7. You need to turn UAC off (system-wide) or start AS "as administrator" to create directory there. In Windows Explorer it is possible to create directory in such situation. The UAC prompt will appear and the operation will be performed in high level integrity process. We need to divide core of AS into two processes to support UAC.

Having briefly looked at W7 & AS, IMO UAC is a non-issue.

The whole virtual directory deal in W7 drives me batty.
The whole Admin is not "Admin" deal drives me batty.
The "looping" (or is it inaccessible?) directories, like "ProgramData\Application Data" deal drives me batty.

Pictview would be a loss, IMO. I have never used WinSCP.

While you could you IrfanView or similar, the loss of integration would be a detriment IMO.

(Matter of fact, I wouldn't be against an option to be able to hide these virtual directories. That would be a separate RFE.)

x86_64 support all the way. Not remotely bothered about UAC.

For me, lack of 64 bit support is now insanely annoying (mostly, it has to be said, because of Microsoft's mental directory mapping mess)

Voted for x64.

How long do you guys think it's going to take to implement? No offense, but the fact that we have to vote for one of these features doesn't sound like there is a lot going on in the near future. Am i wrong?

Unfortunately we have no idea, we didn't it before. We are looking forward to Visual Studio 2008 (or 2010), it sounds like interesting adventure :)

We are starting Early Access Program during next week so you will have access to Preview Builds (so far internal, developer versions) of Altap Salamander.

I use a 32 bit version of Windows, so I am not concerned with x64 support personally, but I voted for it, nevertheless, because I may in the future. Lack of UAC support is a rare annoyance. I'd like it dealt with too.

Loosing PictView would be a 'no go' for me. I would stick with the 32bit version not to loose it.

I cast my vote for x64. The UAC thing has been an irritant since Vista, but now that I'm using Win7 x64, the lack of x64 has made AS only half-useful. The big problem for me is that I have to keep opening Explorer windows to get the 64-bit context handlers.

IMO, Unicode support is much more wanted than both x64 and UAC features. Implementing x64 support is waste of time when the application is just unable to work with international characters in folder and file names.

Please create a new thread about Unicode version, it doesn't belong here.

x64 and UAC support is easier to implement than Unicode, so we want to do it first.

Definately x64. I can't wait!!

The UAC stuff is annoying, but happens infrequently enough that I can cope.

Definitely x64, because the next version of MS Windows will only x64.
