Working directories in another way

Post by KNUT »

What's about working dirs with customized directory depth :?:

The current "state-of-the-art":
During the day the list of working dirs (ALT+F12) is filled up with a lot of dirs - all visited dirs - whatever directory level...
What I mean / my idea:
By predefining a directory depth (directory level) SS only logs up to this level the visited dirs.
The hot-key SHIFT+ALT+F12 now only shows this dirs.

For Example: ALT+F12 look like this:

Code: Select all

C:\Programme\Servant Salamander 2.0\plugins\checkver\
C:\Programme\
C:\Programme\Servant Salamander 2.0\
C:\Programme\Servant Salamander 2.0\plugins\
C:\TEMP\Test\mystuff
C:\TEMP\Test\
C:\TEMP\
C:\TEMP\Test\mystuff\otherthings
C:\TEMP\Test\mystuff\one
C:\TEMP\Test\mystuff\two
C:\WINNT\system32\
C:\WINNT\
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\
Now: The new SHIFT+ALT+F12 would look like this (with a default directory level of 2):

Code: Select all

C:\Programme\Servant Salamander 2.0\
C:\Programme\
C:\TEMP\Test\
C:\TEMP\
C:\WINNT\system32\
C:\WINNT\
You see? A tidy list. And nearly all I need for my work!
This is some kind auf "automatic generated hot paths / favorite paths" for my daily business, isn't it?!

Perhaps a crazy idea, but nifty - i think
I'm looking forward to your comments...

This is one of the ideas "Stefan" mention here => http://forum.altap.cz/viewtopic.php?t=425.

In that thread there are interesting ideas too.

May I suggest another option:
The list will only include the deepest path, but this path will have clickable parts.
Using the same example, the list

C:\Programme\Servant Salamander 2.0\plugins\checkver\
C:\Programme\
C:\Programme\Servant Salamander 2.0\
C:\Programme\Servant Salamander 2.0\plugins\
C:\TEMP\Test\mystuff
C:\TEMP\Test\
C:\TEMP\
C:\TEMP\Test\mystuff\otherthings
C:\TEMP\Test\mystuff\one
C:\TEMP\Test\mystuff\two
C:\WINNT\system32\
C:\WINNT\
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\

will become

C:\Programme\Servant Salamander 2.0\plugins\checkver\
C:\TEMP\Test\mystuff\otherthings
C:\TEMP\Test\mystuff\one
C:\TEMP\Test\mystuff\two
C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc

If I need to go back to C:\WINNT\system32, I will click on system32 in the line C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc .
It indeed requires the use of mouse, but still might be a good compromise. Even without using the mouse, you can always select the whole deepest path and quickly go up with a couple of Backspaces.

Oh, this idea is very good I think.
It is consistent with actual behavior of Directory Line in panels.

Hmm, sounds good. But you already mentioned the disadvantage:

I'm a bit confused and not sure, what's the best solution... :?
Kind regards, KNUT

Just as kind of an add-on to this subject: I think an ability to selectively delete some entries would be a nice touch. Say by pressing delete when the item is highlighted. I can blow away the total history, but not partial. AFAIK.

And, of course, when you do save of your configuration the history is saved also (if checked). This is really the point at which I could have selectively deleted some entries to trim down the starting list to the ones I actually want to keep.

I really like Rogo's idea!

Unless I'm missing something, keyboard interface should not be a problem: Just add the left and right arrow keys to the existing ones:

Alt-F12 : Display list
Up, Down : move highlight through list
Left, Right : move through hierarchy of highlighted item
Mouse-centric, Registered

Rogo's and JohnFredC's ideas plus original Waldemar's request in the thread History od directories - it is a winner combination, I think.

I like rogo's suggestion.

Another approach could be to have a tree structured menu or a treeview.
