What's about a small and fast pdf-viewer ?

Post by frank »

Hello salamander team,

in the meantime the pdf-format has become a special position in the document enviroment. Not only the most documents, prospects and informations are available in the pdf-format, also a lot of scanners are providing the pdf-format for archiving paperdocuments. Therefore I would say a big "hello", if a small and fast pdf-viewer would be part of the PictView.

Thanks for all the features until now and have a nice time.

Post by Mem »

Full version of Salamander includes Eroiica Viewer plugin with support for several formats including PDF, this does not suffice your needs?

Frank, as Mem has already mentioned, a PDF viewer is already part of the Eroiica Viewer plugin (PictView is a raster viewer, not a a vector/office document viewer). The engine for Eroiica Viewer is provided for free by Parallax69 Software Intl as a demo of their commercial Eroiica Imaging application family for viewing, editing, redlining, converting, processing of hundreds of engineering file formats.

As PDF is incredibly complex today, it is not possible to make a small PDF viewer that would support a reasonable subset of PDFs. And because of the robustness also the speed is becoming a problem. Just to give you an example: just rasters inside PDF can be stored using RGB, CMYK, grayscale, indexed color space, or using spot inks (e.g. PANTONE) and others. Rasters can be uncompressed, or compressed using Deflate/ZIP (like PNG), JPEG, LZW (like GIF), CCITT G4 (like fax), JBIG and JPEG2000 compression schemes.

The problem with Eroiica Viewer is that a lot of PDF's render very badly, because of the lack of antialiasing I guess. A PDF-viewer could be made very quickly by embedding the standard Acrobat Reader control. Most people have Acrobat Reader installed.

I've tried using the Explorer viewer plugin to display PDF's, but this works only partly. The document is displayed, but f.e. I can't use the ESC key anymore to quit the viewer. If that is fixed, the Explorer viewer plugin could be used to display PDF documents and other documents for which the necessary software is installed, like Excel, Word, etc.

Try Foxit Reader
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

2,5MB single standalone exe
Foxit PDF Reader is a free reader for PDF (eBook) documents. You can view and print PDF documents with it.

Foxit PDF Reader is small (the download size less than 1MB), so you can download it quickly. It doesn't need any lengthy installation, so you can start to run it as soon as you can download it.

And it starts up immediately, so you don't need to wait the annoying "Welcome" screen to disappear.

Foxit PDF Reader is extreamly easy to use, just double click it to start and then click open button to open your PDF document. If you want to print, click on "Print" button. If you want to setup the page layout for printing, select "Print Setup" from "File" menu.

An excellent and very fast reader.
However, the current release (build 1413) has a bug in searching PDF documents made with OpenOffice. This has been confirmed and Foxit are working on it.
