Http: File Download Manager

Post by therube »

(Food for thought, rather then an actual request ...)

Http: File Download Manager

You already do FTP, so ...

LeechFTP is one of my most often used programs. Very good program, very clean interface, just works well. (I could apply that description to some other programs too.)

LeechFTP is not a "true" download manager in the typical sense, but it performs that function very well. In particular the "URL Snatcher (grabs URLs from Clipboard)". You see a file (be it http: or ftp:), right-click, Copy Link Location (in your browser), which gets copied to the clipboard. LeechFTP grabs that link & downloads the file. Very convenient. It is also quite good at "ferreting out" a true download link when the link is not direct. Just about its only failing is that it does not support https:.

Now there are times when a true download manager is called for, but most often (well most often, depending upon what I'm doing) a simple, clean program such as LeechFTP works wonders. (Most often, with a single file here, a single file there, LeechFTP gets the call throughout the day. Multiple files or when "media" is wanted, then I go to FlashGot & Net Transport.)

Something similar in Salamander would be a benefit, I believe.

I dont want to sound rude, but there is plenty of download managers outthere. I personally use the FDM Free Download Manager
Its true that the file download is a file operation, but I for some unknown reason feel that its not right to put this in Salamander. Usually you just click a URL, let the download manager do the job and forget about it till its finished. The download is not as "interactive" as FTP. Its a one way road. (Are there any upload managers? I've never need one...)

I use the Total Commander proxy plugin in concert with a free TC file system plugin called HTTPBrowser. HTTPBrowser displays a list of files at a user-specified URL in one of the Salamander file panels. You can use a mask to select the files you want from the site and then copy them to the other Salamander panel...

Very useful.

Not to worry :-).

I too use a full featured download manager. But most (quite) often I use LeechFTP. (As posted above I tend to use different tools for different purposes.) When LeechFTP meets my needs, I prefer that over (Net Transport). It's light, good interface, does just what I need & is convenient.

I'm actually fairly new to using FTP in Salamander (again most often & even many times now, I still use LeechFTP). If Salamander were able to handle the other half of what I look to Leech for, http: downloads, I could put LeechFTP to pasture (or at least use it less).

I've used LeechFTP for years. You might even find my comments on the forum where I mention it, but I had to stop using it because of corrupted files it created.
