Horribly slow file deletion (in AS 2.54 and 3.0 beta 1)

When I delete them by SHIFT-Del, it takes about 5 seconds to do the job. Deleting to recycle bin takes no time. SHIFT-Del in Explorer exhibits no problem.

Using 64-bit AS on 64-bit Windows 8.

We will need more information. Is it OK in AS 2.54? Can you reproduce this problem while deleting just single file? Can you reproduce it also on flash disks and network drives?

The same (slow) in AS 2.54.
Deleting just a single file.
Same on flash drives.
Haven't tried network drives.

Is it final version of Windows 8? We didn't see this problem on our W8 Pro.

Yes, it is. Is there anything I can do to help your troubleshoot this?

Have you done the test with antivirus switched off/disabled?

I have considered that, SelfMan. Blaming it was the first thing I did. Turning Windows Defender off and on hasn't produced a change that I could perceive.

Can anyone else reproduce this problem on final version of Windows 8 Pro?

It would be good to do a process monitor trace.

Are you using "Libraries"?
Perhaps deleting from within the Library structure or something like that?

(Can you imaging, I've been using Win7 for how long now, & have no idea what that "feature" is. Must be too old to learn or to set in my ways to learn differently.)

Windows 7 Libraries

I have found the cause (not the cause but a case when the problem happens). The slowing down happens when Windows Speech Recognition is running.

I thought that recommendations on http://auralbits.blogspot.com/2010/04/w ... r-fun.html would work, but they didn't.

I have used these settings on Windows 7 to stop the slowing down with Firefox, but this doesn't work for Salamander. Here's an explanation from someone from MS regarding my past problem with Firefox and WSR:
I suspect that the problem you’re having is related to WSR’s use of MSAA (in Vista) or UI Automation (in Windows 7). WSR uses this to create the ‘Say what you see’ commands. If you want to turn this feature off, you can do so by changing the following registry keys via RegEdit:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Speech\Preferences\en-US\

Create a DWORD value named MSAAEnabled and set its value to ‘0’. This will completely disable the ‘say what you see’ feature.

If you want to turn this off only in specific applications, use RegEdit to visit the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Speech\Preferences\AppCompatDisableMSAA

And create a string value whose name matches the application you wish to disable. For example, create a value named ‘firefox.exe’ to turn off ‘Say what you see’ in Firefox.
Maybe the Salamander people could investigate if there's anything else that could be done to fix this.
