iPod - Enable Disk use and AS 2.52 beta 1

I was happy to see that AS 2.52 beta 1 has Auto-update. I have found an issue with it not working with an iPod. Windows XP assigned drive L to my iPod 120 gig Classic. AS 2.52 beta 1 only updates the free space if the iPod's drive is being access by AS. It sometimes but not always updates with AS as the front application but never updates when it isn't the front application. Most time it only updates if I am traversing the directory.

How do I get songs on my ipod? I am new at the whole ipod thing. I am planning on getting an ipod shuffle. I want to put music I already ripped to my computer on my ipod. Do I have to go buy music from itunes? Is there not a way to transfer songs from my computer to the ipod?
