If you're still looking for an easy native way to do this in Salamander without third-party context extensions, you can also just select the file, hit F5 (Copy), and then change the target file name right in the dialog before hitting Enter.
Alternatively, doing a quick Ctrl+C followed by Ctrl+V in ...

I'd also suggest testing the behavior with a clean/default configuration if anyone is still seeing the issue, since custom settings can sometimes cause unexpected results. That can quickly tell you whether it's a configuration problem or something else.

I'd also check whether the behavior is the same with a clean/default configuration. A lot of odd issues end up being caused by an old setting or plugin. If it works with a fresh config, you can usually narrow it down pretty quickly from there.

One thing that's helped me in similar situations is checking whether the latest version changes the behavior before spending too much time troubleshooting. If the problem is still there, posting the exact version and the steps to reproduce it usually makes it much easier for others to help.

I've also found that checking the file association settings after an update can be worthwhile, since sometimes they get reset and make it look like the viewer or editor integration has stopped working.

Good point. I’ve noticed some archive formats behave differently depending on how they were originally packed too. Sometimes just recreating the archive with a newer compression method fixes a lot of these odd extraction issues.
