Yes, it's a new patch in 2.52. Directories has no extension and right now the only exception is mentioned option Sort by extension: consider extensions in directories names. But it doesn't affect anything else, only the sorting.

In options > configuration > panels > sorting > sort by extension : consider extensions in directories names
even if the checkbox is checked or not, the extensions in directories' names are not considered... :(
Is this description clear enough or do i have to add more information ...
